Live plants help the same way — they consume nitrogen compounds directly — so a heavily planted tank earns extra headroom too.
Where the inch-per-gallon rule breaks
Use extra caution with anything over four inches at adult size, since body mass (and waste) grows much faster than length; with goldfish, which are famously heavy waste producers and need roughly double the water the rule suggests; and with territorial species like cichlids and bettas, where behavior limits stocking long before water quality does. Also remember that fish are sold as juveniles: a common pleco in the store is two inches, but the adult is over a foot. Always stock for the adult size, which is what the calculator asks for.
Stocking new tanks
A brand-new tank has no bacteria colony, so even a correctly stocked tank will poison its fish if you add everything at once. Cycle the tank first (fishless cycling with bottled ammonia takes three to six weeks), then add fish in small groups two weeks apart, testing water in between.
